letter to Cardinal Moro Siri: "The Church rests with the Christian Democrats'
's opening to the left was a price to pay to maintain political unity of Catholics. With this argument Aldo Moro, the political secretary of the DC, in December 1962 trying to convince the Cardinal Giuseppe Siri, president of the CEI, the need for a few months before turning sanctioned by Congress in Naples. This is shown by a letter sent to the Moro Cardinal Siri and published in the book, the Church, Italy (Marietti 1820, pp. 418, 25 €), a collection of essays by various authors dedicated to the Archbishop of Genoa, edited by Professor Paul Gheda, which in addition to numerous unpublished sources report proposes new approaches for reading and interpreting the figure of Cardinal Genovese. A copy of the confidential letter of Moro Siri was found in the archives of Gheda by Cardinal Montini, who would become Pope a few months after E shows that, beyond the undeniable differences in approach to Italian politics, the two most prominent archbishops episcopate of our country at that moment acting in agreement: none of his reluctance to open from the left - both were deeply anti Montini Siri James Lercaro that as well, the archbishop of Bologna - but everyone thought that would go to safeguard the political unity of Catholics in the Christian Democrats. It therefore concluded, albeit with different accents, that the tactical alliance with the Socialists would be the price to pay to maintain the centrality of the Catholic party in the government of the country.
Moro, the letter reiterates the Syrians, that the DC aims to "express the political field, in a unified way the Catholic world, reflecting the fundamental religious and moral imperatives, assume the defense, to the maximum extent possible, the Magisterium of the Church in civil society. " The choice of opening on the left, then, though still debated, it is necessary because "there is, in the current parliament democratic alternative to this formula of government." In addition, the opening left - Moro explains the cardinal president of the Italian bishops - promotes "the process of autonomy of the Socialist Party and the subsequent isolation of the Communist Party." The Secretary of the DC tries to reassure the Syrians: the party intends to "enhance his characterization of the party of Christian inspiration and its connection with what the Catholic world, from which it always has and continues to paint portraits, the doctrinal content, high ideals reasons The preparation and the sensitivity of his men qualified at all levels. " The contact with the hierarchy will therefore not tarnish, but rather strengthen, just at the stage where you will need to talk 'forces with those of different ideal. "
In the confidential letter to the Cardinal of Genoa, the Christian Democrat politician said that the Democrats, because of its close connection with the Church, thanked the bishops will choose candidates in order to avoid "serious findings of that moral and religious people may regard be formulated "by the Church," with the effect of creating difficulties and hardship of conscience for Catholic voters. " And he wants to solve in a direct, uniform and timely manner to any problems respect.
Cardinal Siri wait several days before responding to Moro. Then, on Dec. 12, he wrote, confirming that he favored "the proper disposition of the bishops for action that can be useful both to the good of souls as the supreme interest of the Fatherland." So Siri does not object, but rather reassuring Moro. She tells him that he exercised his influence on the bishops to make them understand the reasons for the Secretary-Democrat, and the choice of opening on the left was playing in the party leadership.
It is worth mentioning that a few months before the beginning of 1962, the Democrat Secretary launched a consultation in part on whether Italian Bishops open to socialists. Just over half of respondents did not appear substantially unfavorable to the hypothesis, although the survey had been cut off entire regions, such as Liguria, whose episcopate was chaired by Siri. Less than a year later, however, Moro calls to him to help ensure that the bishops support the choice. This choice, it is clear from the Secretary DC, was essentially tactical, strategic alliance-election, not a sharing of principles, and was intended to maintain the centrality of the Christian Democrat party.
